Six Egg Day & A Lamb Breakdown

This is what a 120 lb. lamb looks like in my freezer.
My husband playfully gauges how each day of our lives will turn out by the number of eggs generated by our six chickens.  He will go out to collect the eggs (in the evening) and then upon his return he will say, “Look, it’s going to be a six egg day tomorrow!”  That means it’s going to be a really good day.  Only three eggs, not so good a day. Day before yesterday there were six eggs. It rained yesterday evening and prevented us from going fishing.  I am not so sure about his theory.
Day before yesterday, the day before the six egg day, I was shopping at Fred Meyer.  On my way to the register a couple, and their baby, passed me as they were leaving the store.  They looked super familiar to me and I wondered if I was going to have to say hello to them if they saw me and recognized me.  They passed by without even a glance in my direction.  I was relieved because I hate running into people at the store.  Not because I don’t want to see people.  I hate running into people because I always look like garbage and I am always in a hurry.  So I am embarrassed and my mind is on other things.  As soon as I thought past my relief I realized that these familiar people were never going to recognize me because they did not know me, but I did know them.  It was Kody and Robyn Brown from the reality TV show Sister Wives!  Ben and I watched a ton of reality TV while I was pregnant with Will.  We basically ate cake and casseroles, watched reality TV, worked, and slept!  I became intimately involved with Kody and Robyn yet they did not even recognize me!
Maybe the oddity of seeing Kody and Robyn Brown cancelled out the oddity of getting six eggs in one day.  Stranger things have happened.  In fact a stranger thing did happen.
The other day I posted about being the proud owner of a freshly butchered 120 lb. lamb.  I mentioned that since we would have meat in the freezer we probably would not draw on any of the hunts we put in for.  Well, we drew on an antelope rifle hunt.  This will be my first hunt ever.  It is in September.  I will keep you posted.  I have been extremely interested in hunting ever since I read Girl Hunter and The Omnivores Dilemma.

Both extremely well written books that heavily touch on the notion of being aware of where your food is coming from.  I try but I still find myself succumbing to convenience way more than I should or would like to.  Oh well this hunt is a step in an educational direction for me.

The lamb breakdown:
1-120 lb. lamb = ~55 lbs. of wrapped meat after butcher.
2 (leg of lamb roasts)
11 lbs. (1/2 sausage, 1/2 burger)
1 (rack of lamb)
4 (lamb shanks)
24 (lamb chops, they must be super tiny!)
2 packages (stew meat)

Cost:
$120 for the lamb
$90 for kill fee and cutting
Total = $210 (~$3.82 per lb.)
Not bad considering I have never seen any cut of lamb in any grocery store for under $4 per lb. (including shoulder chops and burger).
Can’t wait to see how it tastes!
