Soap Story

toothbrush: for soap sliver size comparison.
 Julie’s new soap
Ben’s old and new soap
Well, I did it.  I finally threw away the two, dime sized, slivers of bar soap that I have been trying to lather up, in the shower, with for the past few weeks! And, I replaced them with a brand spanking new bar the size of a couple of decks of playing cards.  Call the time police!  My shower scheme is about to decrease by, at least, 10 minutes!  Although, when it comes to bubbling up with a bar of soap, there is definitely a sweet interval of time to enjoy.  The first few uses are a little awkward with the bar’s sharp squared off edges. But then, maybe about a week or so into the new bar, the edges smooth out and there is still a good bar to hand size ratio going on.  That is when the bar is just perfect for good, fast, and functional lather action.  OK, this is starting to sound a little weird.  Note to self, throw the damn thing out when it gets to be about the size of a fun sized Hershey bar.
There you go. It is always about the food. Isn’t it?  But it has to be, right?  Paired with water it sustains us down to our very last taste bud cell.  It’s not like alcohol or nicotine, you can’t just quit it, or quit hanging out in places where they sell or serve it.  And I would never want to!  Besides being in the presence of Ben, Sam, and Will, cooking and eating the things I cook, is my favorite thing to do. Thank goodness, most of the time; I get to do all of these things at the same time!  I think that is part of the reason I love food so much.  It really does bring us together.  Even when we are busy, and making and eating our own dinners (because of schedules and diets), we are still in the kitchen together.  Everything is centered in the kitchen, in my home, because we do everything in there.  Another one of the reasons I love food is because we all have it in common, every single person on this planet!  Some of us too much, some of us not enough, but even that troublesome piece of the puzzle brings us together as humans.
This summer my extended family is getting together for a rather large reunion.  When I think about this event, in my head, I picture people I have not seen for years gathered around tables stacked with paper plates and plastic forks lying next to a bowls of yellow mustard potato salad sprinkled with bright red paprika. I see folks resting in lawn chairs, solo cups half full of boxed wine and bottles of bud light and ice cold coca cola cans clenched between their knees, talking about meals they enjoyed together twenty years ago.  Faces flushed from a day full of sunshine, mouths wide with laughs and smiles ready for the next bite of chicken salad or corn on the cob.  I see food, I see my family, and I see love.
